Kashika is the name of the speech of Banaras. Its source is Kashi, and Kashi issues from the Sanskrit root kāś, which means: to shine, to appear, to display, to disclose, to illumine, to express, to blossom, to open, and to burn.
From these many senses of a single word it is clear that Kashika is not a language alone; it is also the life-rhythm of the oldest waking settlement in the world.
In this standing festival of colour and raga, all these senses of Kashika find their arrangement.
The cultural calendar of Kashi is a slate already crowded with the manifold meanings of Satyam, Shivam and Sundaram. And yet a space remains on it for one more festival, one more celebration of colour and raga. So in this redoubtable civilisation of seven days and nine festivals, this one too will make its place — room enough for a signature.
In truth, this festival is an offering: to set out the shastra of Kashi and the lok of Kashi, made lucid and savoury, before devout travellers, lovers of music and art, the citizens of this city, and the generations yet to come.
